    Alex and John,

Weeping at this. How lovely this man is. My mother’s father came from a Greek Orthodox tradition and I remember going to his church as a little girl and being so taken with all the gold and colors. My grandfather had the same light in his eyes as this painter.

That he lives by his faith is so earnestly is humbling.

    Thank you once again,

    Barbara

This is such a rare, authentic and devout iconographer, you have to think his work must be filled with something special, too – plus, of course, it’s beautiful.

Quite a contrast from the the other artist. So interesting to have both point of view. Basilios seems to be the more human and likeable. Thank you,

Very touching. It’s great to hear the varied voices of these
icon painters. All the different angles start adding up to a real understanding and appreciation of the phenomenon of the icon.
    Thanks.

There is an exhibit of Byzantine Art in the timeline at the Met, which I hope to see one day. It puts icons in their historical context, which I think makes them even more rich and wonderful. (I’m sorry I missed them at the Getty, did you see it?)

An icon teacher, Betsy Porter in San Francisco, posts this on her web site:

DIVINE RULES FOR THE ICON PAINTER (Traditional)

Before starting work, make the sign of the Cross, pray in silence, and pardon your enemies.
Work with care on every detail of your icon, as if you were working in front of the Lord Himself.
During work, pray in order to strengthen yourself physically and spiritually; avoid all useless words, and keep
    silence.
Pray in particular to the Saint whose face you are painting. Keep your mind from distractions, and the Saint will be
    close to you.
When you choose a color, stretch out your hands interiorly to the Lord and ask His counsel.
Do not be jealous of your neighbor’s work; their success is your success too.
When your icon is finished, thank God that His Mercy granted you the grace to paint the Holy Images.
Have your icon blessed by putting it on the Holy Table (of your parish church). Be the first to pray before it,
    before giving it to others.

    Never forget:

The joy of spreading icons throughout the world.
The joy of the work of icon writing.
The joy of giving the saint the possibility to shine through his/her icon.
The joy of being in union with the Saint whose face you are revealing.

    Alexandra and John,
I found your card and finally are home long enough to look and now I feel quite fortunate to have watched your videos of Matia,Evangelo and Basilios. All so humble and seemingly fulfilled in their lives of producing and creating stunning iconography. Beautiful and rich.
It was good to meet you both in May at the Noetic Center. I hope you have settled in at home after being away and are reliving your adventures and enjoying that
    Care to you both
