The Virgin of Guadalupe Videos Coming Soon!

The Basilica of Guadalupe is the most visited Catholic shrine in the world. We will visit it in December, to attend the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. While we are there we hope to talk with some of the pilgrims who attend, asking them to tell us about their experience.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is Mexico’s most popular religious and cultural image. According to tradition the image of The Virgin of Guadalupe appeared miraculously on the cloak of Juan Diego, a simple indigenous peasant, on a hill near Mexico City on December 12, 1531.

The symbolism associated with Virgin reflects the Woman of the Apocalypse from the New Testament’s Revelation 12:1, “arrayed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.”

The imagery of the Virgin also corresponds to ancient Mexican symbolism. For example, her blue-green mantle was the color used by the divine couple Ometecuhtli and Omecihuat, and her belt was often used as a sign of pregnancy.
